Claire Tabouret, selected after the consultation launched by the Ministry of Culture, is presenting life-size models of the cathedral's six future contemporary stained-glass windows until 29 March 2026. Planned for six windows on the south side of the nave, they take as their theme Pentecost, a symbol of unity and harmony among men, chosen by the Archdiocese of Paris.

Following several months of restoration work, the upper sections of the apse walls are once again visible. Visitors can now appreciate the many restored features, including stonework, gargoyles, parapets, and sculptures.&nbsp;The removal of the scaffolding has also revealed other details, such as the tie beams, metal elements that encircle the apse to strengthen its structure. In its commitment to showcasing the heritage and artistic trades and to inspiring callings for these professions, the Rebâtir Notre-Dame de Paris public establishment is delighted to promote apprenticeships in the context of the cathedral’s restoration. In 2022, 2023 and 2024, nearly 58,000 apprenticeship hours were completed, including over 30,000 under professional integration schemes, thanks to terms set out in the works procurement contracts.&nbsp;These hours represent the hard work of:- 62 men and 12 women;- 68 people on apprenticeship contracts and 6 on vocational training contracts;- 52 people aged 18-27 years old and 21 aged 28 years old or over. The Restoration of Notre Dame de Paris: supporting apprenticeship

The south tower now features an impressive double-helix staircase! Made from solid oak, this 178-step staircase will allow visitors to the towers to climb up through the center of the south tower belfry to access the bourdon, the cathedral’s famous largest bell, named Emmanuel, under the best safety conditions. They will also enjoy an exceptional view of the belfry’s spectacular wooden architecture.&nbsp;At 21 m high, 3.6 m in diameter and weighing 20 tons, it is the biggest wooden double-helix staircase in the world! Under the architects’ direction, it involved 1,400 hours of studies and 9,200 hours of construction by a team of fifteen carpenters, three cabinet makers, three apprentices and one master wrought-iron worker.&nbsp;It is made up of 1,200 pieces of oak, assembled one by one in the south tower, after a test fit in the workshop.&nbsp;Tower visit circuit: <a href="https://www.monuments-nationaux.fr/actualites-du-cmn/rendez-vous-en-2025-pour-visiter-les-tours-de-notre-dame-de-paris" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Centre des monuments nationaux</a> (Center for National Monuments)

This week, the work site welcomed back sixteen special guests: the statues of the spire. The statues had been removed a few days before the fire and were restored in a workshop by metalworkers, coppersmiths, and patina finishers. They have been on display at the <a href="https://www.citedelarchitecture.fr/fr/agenda/exposition/notre-dame-de-paris-des-batisseurs-aux-restaurateurs" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Cité de l'Architecture et du Patrimoine</a> since 2021, awaiting their return to the new spire in early summer 2025. What do these statues represent?Twelve of the statues on the spire are human figures: the Apostles. Among them, the statue of Saint Thomas, patron saint of architects, has the face of Viollet-le-Duc.&nbsp;The other four statues represent the Tetramorph, or the four Evangelists in the form of winged figures, with which they are usually associated: a lion for Saint Mark, a bull for Saint Luke, an eagle for Saint John, and an angel for Saint Matthew. &nbsp;<a href="https://www.facebook.com/share/r/1AR9VQhXz9/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Video: Statues return to the spire</a>

At the base of the spire, ornamental roofers have taken over the installation of the lead elements that give Viollet-le-Duc's structure its unique silhouette, including the griffins.&nbsp;Whereas the lead sheets covering the spire have been pre-shaped in the workshop on templates, a different method has been used to create the more complex and prominent decorations such as the griffins, which are cast in the workshop to ensure their longevity.&nbsp;The regular and ornamental roofers therefore work with:<ul><li>sculptors, who produce a wooden model that is used to create a wax mold for casting;</li><li>founders, who pour molten lead into the mold;</li><li>polishers, who give the sculpture a fine, tooled finish.</li></ul> New scaffolding has been erected to enable work to continue on the spire roof. It is the third to be installed in this location.The first, fire-damaged scaffolding, which had been intended for the restoration of the spire prior to the fire, was taken down in 2021.&nbsp;The second, erected on the floor of the crossing, was used to successively rebuild the arches, the structural timbers of the spire and the upper part of its roof. It was dismantled in 2024, gradually unveiling the new spire and enabling the completion of the vaulting of the transept crossing on May 24.&nbsp;This third scaffolding is much lighter: designed to enable the roofers to complete the roofing of the base of the spire, it does not need to reach the very top! It can therefore be anchored on four pillars outside the cathedral. It will be dismantled by the end of the summer of 2025, finally revealing the new spire of Notre-Dame de Paris. &nbsp;

A moins de trois mois de la réouverture du monument, plus de 41 000 visiteurs ont découvert les opérations de restauration de Notre-Dame de Paris et échangé avec les acteurs du chantier !&nbsp;À l’occasion de la 41e édition des Journées européennes du patrimoine, les 20, 21 et 22 septembre 2024, l’établissement public Rebâtir Notre-Dame de Paris à proposé dès le vendredi 20 septembre une plongée exceptionnelle au cœur des opérations de restauration de la cathédrale avec un nouveau village du chantier installé sur le parvis de la cathédrale.&nbsp;&nbsp;Au programme de ce week-end, qui s'est tenu exceptionnellement sur trois journées&nbsp;: rencontres, démonstrations, ateliers jeune public, conférences, concerts et animations avec l’ensemble des corps de métiers qui œuvrent à la renaissance du monument&nbsp;(équipes de l’établissement public, architectes, entreprises, compagnons, artisans d’art.…). Était également présente l’équipe en charge de la cathédrale au sein du diocèse de Paris, affectataire du monument et chargé de l’aménagement liturgique.&nbsp;Neuf espaces ont permis au public de découvrir toutes les opérations de restauration de la cathédrale et d’échanger avec les acteurs mobilisés. Sept d’entre eux ont proposé des rencontres et démonstrations avec les compagnons et artisans du chantier :&nbsp;<ul><li>Piloter la restauration de la cathédrale : présentation des opérations menées par les équipes de la maîtrise d’ouvrage et de la maîtrise d’œuvre, de la structure d’ordonnancement, pilotage, et coordination (OPC), de la logistique, du diocèse, et présentation des différents métiers qui sont mobilisés sur ces opérations. &nbsp;</li><li>Accompagner le chantier : démonstration par les échafaudeurs de montage et de démontage d’une structure d’échafaudage mesurant huit mètres de haut, démonstration par les grutiers de conduite de grue sur le chantier en coordination avec un responsable des moyens de levage via radio sur le parvis. Une caméra installée dans la cabine du grutier a permis au public de suivre en direct, à cinq reprises durant le week-end, différents grutages sur le chantier. &nbsp;</li><li>Restituer les charpentes : présentation par les charpentiers d’une copie de l’enrayure 8 de la flèche, démonstrations de taille manuelle et d’assemblage, de mesure au fil à plomb et de piquage.&nbsp; &nbsp;</li><li>Restaurer la couverture et les ornements : présentation par les couvreurs et les couvreurs-ornemanistes de prototypes de couverture et d’ornements réalisés en atelier.&nbsp; &nbsp;</li><li>Restaurer les décors : démonstration par les ébénistes et menuisiers d’arts avec la taille manuelle de trois éléments : un panneau ajouré de l’orgue de chœur, une fenêtre du presbytère et un détail de porte. … Présentation par les restauratrices de peintures des techniques de restitution des décors des chapelles du chœur et de la toile peinte ornant l’oculus de la voûte de la croisée du transept. L’objectif : recueillir les tampons présents sur les différents espaces et stands du village du chantier, récompense à la clé !&nbsp;&nbsp;</td></tr></tbody></table></figure>&nbsp;Par ailleurs, pour célébrer cette édition particulière des Journées européennes du patrimoine, une programmation culturelle était proposée tout au long du week-end :&nbsp; - Concert de la Maîtrise de Notre-Dame : vendredi 20 et samedi 21, à 20h&nbsp; - Conférences : samedi 21 et dimanche 22. Comme tous les ans, l’établissement public Rebâtir Notre-Dame de Paris proposait des conférences faisant intervenir de nombreux acteurs du chantier sur les&nbsp;opérations et métiers à l’œuvre pour relever Notre-Dame de Paris.&nbsp; La librairie du chantier, animée par Connaissance des Arts. Sur les palissades du parvis de la cathédrale, découvrez l'exposition “Visages du chantier”, en partenariat avec Studio Harcourt.&nbsp;Depuis 2019, entreprises, compagnons et artisans d’art issus des métiers du patrimoine et du bâtiment, ingénieurs de bureaux d’études, experts et prestataires dans les métiers de l’organisation, de la coordination et de la logistique, architectes - maîtres d’œuvre, équipes de l’établissement public Rebâtir Notre-Dame de Paris, partenaires au sein du diocèse de Paris et du ministère de la Culture, travaillent ensemble, unis, animés par la passion et la fierté, pour relever Notre-Dame de Paris.&nbsp;Cette exposition met à l’honneur ces femmes et ces hommes qui rendent possible, par leurs compétences et leur mobilisation hors du commun, la restauration de la cathédrale à son plus haut niveau de qualité, en relevant le défi du calendrier fixé.&nbsp;Pendant une semaine, Studio Harcourt Paris, portraitiste d’exception dont la signature indémodable est le portrait en noir et blanc, a installé son studio sur la base-vie du chantier pour réaliser les portraits, individuels et collectifs, de près de 500 acteurs et partenaires de la restauration de la cathédrale.&nbsp;Ces portraits incarnent les milliers de personnes à l’œuvre depuis 2019. Restoration village on the cathedral forecourt: 30,146 people discovered the restoration and met the people involved!&nbsp;For the 40th edition of the European Heritage Days, the Rebâtir Notre Dame de Paris public establishment invited you to step into the heart of the restoration project and meet the enthusiastic and determined people involved. From March 2023 to May 2024, the exhibition "Notre-Dame: the rebirth of an icon" was displayed on the palisades in front of Notre-Dame.&nbsp;The cathedral of Paris for more than eight centuries, Notre Dame attracts pilgrims and heritage lovers from all over the world. It embodies the capital and inspires artists.&nbsp;The fire that struck on April 15, 2019, provoked an incomparable outpouring of emotion and generosity. Since then, journeymen, craftspeople, architects, engineers, and experts from many disciplines have been at work so that the cathedral can reopen its doors for worshippers and tourists in 2024, in accordance with the objective set by the president of the French Republic.&nbsp;This exhibition, produced by the public establishment Rebâtir Notre-Dame de Paris, in partnership with <a href="https://www.nationalgeographic.com/magazine/article/notre-dame-rises-again-feature" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">National Geographic</a> magazine, offers an exceptional insight into the heart of the history and restoration of the cathedral.&nbsp;Through the eyes of photographer Tomas van Houtryve and graphic artist Fernando G. Achevée le 2 septembre 2024, l'exposition s'est inscrite au sein du parcours permanent de la Cité de l’architecture et du patrimoine. Une occasion de (re)découvrir la cathédrale et son histoire, depuis sa construction jusqu’au chantier d’aujourd’hui.&nbsp;Le 15 avril 2019, un violent incendie touche la cathédrale. À la suite de cette catastrophe, un chantier de restauration considérable se met en place, financé grâce à la générosité de 340 000 donateurs issus de 150 pays mobilisés dès la nuit de l’incendie. Le chantier est placé sous la responsabilité d’un établissement public dédié, installé le 1er décembre 2019. Le projet de restauration, présenté en juillet 2020 à la Commission nationale du patrimoine et de l’architecture et approuvé à l’unanimité, fait le choix de la fidélité au monument blessé et de l’authenticité des matériaux. Il rendra en 2024 la cathédrale Notre-Dame aux fidèles et visiteurs du monde entier.&nbsp;Une aventure humaine exceptionnelle se déroule au cœur de Paris et dans de nombreux ateliers partout en France : compagnons, artisans, architectes, ingénieurs et chercheurs sont tous mobilisés afin de faire renaître l’édifice. Ces hommes et ces femmes s’inscrivent dans la longue lignée des bâtisseurs qui ont façonné l’histoire de ce patrimoine mondial de l’humanité.&nbsp;Fruit d’une coproduction entre l’établissement public chargé de la conservation et de la restauration de la cathédrale Notre-Dame de Paris, maître d’ouvrage du chantier, et la Cité de l’architecture et du patrimoine, cette exposition offre un lien privilégié avec l’édifice pour le moment inaccessible au public. Elle permet de découvrir le savoir-faire des compagnons et artisans d’art qui œuvrent à rendre la cathédrale au culte et à la visite en 2024. Elle est enfin l’occasion de mettre en lumière les permanences et les évolutions des techniques utilisées sur des chantiers patrimoniaux.&nbsp;Cette exposition a été conçue en coproduction avec la Cité de l’architecture et du patrimoine.&nbsp;CommissariatIsabelle Marquette, Conservatrice du patrimoine en charge de la Galerie des moulages, Cité de l'architecture et du patrimoineLisa Bergugnat, Responsable de la programmation et de la médiation culturelle, établissement public chargé de la conservation et de la restauration de la cathédrale Notre-Dame de Paris&nbsp;<hr>&nbsp;<h3>&nbsp;</h3><h3>Expérience immersive “Notre-Dame de Paris, le jumeau virtuel”</h3>&nbsp;Le grand public a pu découvrir dans le Téléport l’Exaltemps, lieu d’expérimentation, de recherche et de médiation, conçu par Dassault Systèmes, au sein de la Cité de l’architecture et du patrimoine, une expérience immersive inédite à l’échelle 1I1 qui permet de se téléporter dans plusieurs empreintes numériques tridimensionnelles de la cathédrale, capturées à différents moments de son histoire. &nbsp;Menée par un guide conférencier, l'expérience plonge les visiteurs au cœur des données scientifiques et de la restauration de la cathédrale, grâce à la collaboration des équipes du chantier scientifique du CNRS et du Ministère de la Culture, de l’Établissement public Rebâtir Notre-Dame de Paris et de Dassault Systèmes.&nbsp;Cette immersion à l’échelle 1I1, dans les coulisses de la science en marche, fait écho à la collection permanente de moulages grandeur nature de la Cité de l’architecture et du patrimoine, empreintes de monuments réalisées au plâtre au XIXe et s’inscrit dans la continuité de l’exposition temporaire « Notre Dame de Paris : des bâtisseurs aux restaurateurs ».

PROJECTS SEEKING SUPPORT

Overlooking the cathedral square and forming an essential part of Notre-Dame's iconic silhouette, the towers of the west façade remain in good condition on the square-facing side but bear the marks of time on their other elevations. They are also home to the celebrated chimeras created by the architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc, which, like many of the façade's sculptural elements, have been severely damaged by weathering. &nbsp;Their restoration, together with that of the gargoyles and numerous other decorative features, is now essential to ensure their long-term preservation. The roof of the North Tower must also be completely rebuilt.

Restoring the towers and their chimera

CURRENT CONDITIONThe north, south and east façades are encrusted with grime, and the stonework has deteriorated in places. The rich architectural decoration – including the chimeras and gargoyles adorning the towers – is now severely deteriorated and requires extensive restoration. Some sculptures have lost their heads, while many others have been severely damaged by moisture and pollution. The roof of the north tower is generally in poor condition, and the louvered bell openings are damaged in places. RESTORATION NEEDEDThe towers’ masonry elevations and exterior sculpted decorations will require extensive restoration. Cleaning work must be carried out on the grime-encrusted façades. The roof of the north tower must be completely replaced to prevent water infiltration that could endanger the monument in the long term. The restoration of the chimeras and gargoyles will include cleaning, conservation, and repair of the sculptures.
