Restoring the south façade of the transept
The south façade of the transept presents unique conservation challenges. Owing to its exposure to the prevailing winds, its masonry has deteriorated more extensively and is subjected to greater thermal stress as a result of direct solar exposure.
CURRENT CONDITION
The cathedral’s transept arms are in varying states of preservation. Having undergone only localized repairs since the major nineteenth-century restoration campaign, their state of preservation was already causing concern before the fire of April 15, 2019. Time has taken its toll on the sculptural decoration and statuary, with portions of several sculptures having been lost.
RESTORATION NEEDED
The facades must first be cleaned before the damaged masonry and sculptural decorative elements can be restored.
The total cost of the operations amounts to €7.1 million (current euros).
