Restoring the exterior elevations of the nave

Restoring the exterior elevations of the nave

CURRENT CONDITION

Special attention must be paid to all exterior elevations of the nave. This includes restoration of the gallery and the stained-glass windows in the nave, consolidation of the flying buttresses, and work on all three levels of the north and south sides of the cathedral. This work aims to preserve the monument’s stability while restoring clarity and brilliance to its architecture.

RESTORATION NEEDED

Flying buttresses: Several types of restoration are anticipated depending on the condition of the stone: from complete or partial dismantling, to the replacement of individual blocks with temporary propping.

The sculptural decoration, which is extensively exposed to the elements, has suffered severe deterioration, with some elements having disappeared entirely. These features will be cleaned and then restored. The most damaged elements must be fully reconstructed.

The total cost of the operations amounts to €66.4 million (current euros).
•    Work on the south elevations of the nave and the stained-glass windows of the galleries: €33 million
•    Work on the north elevations of the nave and the stained-glass windows of the galleries: €33.4 million
