Voicing the Great Organ

As night falls on the cathedral, the pipes of the great organ begin to resonate: the noise from the worksite has stopped and the organ builders have come to fine tune the individual pipes that make up this incredible instrument.

One of them sits at the manuals in the console, facing the silent nave. Following his indications, a second organ builder adjusts the openings in the pipes, which were installed and tuned during the day by another team.

The voicing is complete when all the pipes in each rank ring together in harmony. The entire operation is carried out by ear and requires complete silence in the cathedral.

Did you know? The great organ is composed of nearly 8,000 pipes, which were all disassembled, dusted and re-installed in their places one by one!
