Part of the cathedral’s northern belfry, a timber tower structure which holds the bells, was damaged by the fire of April 15, 2019 and needs to be restored.&nbsp;To carry out the work, the tower’s eight bells first had to be removed. The operation was also an opportunity to clean the lead dust off them, check their condition and carry out necessary repair work on two of them which had been damaged by the heat.&nbsp;&nbsp;Before removing the bells themselves, the bell specialists took down each of the clappers. They then installed a metal gantry at the top of the belfry, to which they attached a hoist in order to lift each bell with its headstock, the large wooden block that passes through its straps and carries the weight of the bell.&nbsp;<figure class="image image_resized" style="width:62.6%;"><img src="/uploads/P1008027_min_ca1955bf0d.JPG"></figure>© Rebâtir Notre-Dame de Paris&nbsp;They were then able to lower the bells one by one to the floor of the bell chamber. The only access is through narrow openings in the abat-sons and there is only one way to take the bells from the top of the tower down to the ground: a vertical route covering 50 m through three levels of vaults and floors fitted with trapdoors.&nbsp;Using the same hoist system, the bell specialists lowered each bell down to the cathedral floor through the circular trapdoors.&nbsp;&nbsp;The bells were then packed onto a truck to take them to the foundry where they will be restored before returning to their place in the cathedral ahead of its reopening in December 2024.

Une partie du beffroi nord de la cathédrale, structure de charpente abritant les cloches, a été atteinte par les flammes de l’incendie du 15 avril 2019. C’est ainsi l’occasion de les nettoyer de la poussière de plomb, les réviser ou réaliser les restaurations nécessaires à deux d’entre elles ayant souffert de la chaleur.&nbsp;&nbsp;Avant de déposer les cloches elles-mêmes, les campanistes ont retiré les battants de chacune d’elles, puis installé un portique métallique au niveau supérieur du beffroi, sur lequel ils ont fixé un palan, permettant de soulever la cloche et son mouton, la grosse pièce de bois qui passe à travers ses anses et supporte son poids.&nbsp;&nbsp;<figure class="image image_resized" style="width:62.6%;"><img src="/uploads/P1008027_min_ca1955bf0d.JPG"></figure>© Rebâtir Notre-Dame de Paris&nbsp;Ils ont alors pu descendre chaque cloche une à une jusqu’au plancher de la chambre des cloches. On ne peut y accéder que par d’étroites portes percées dans les abat-sons. Pour descendre les cloches jusqu’au niveau du sol, il n’existait donc qu’une voie verticale entre la partie haute du beffroi et le sol, d’une hauteur de 50 mètres et qui traversait trois niveaux de voutes et de planchers tous équipés de trappes.&nbsp;&nbsp;Utilisant le même système de palan, les campanistes ont fait descendre chaque cloche jusqu’au sol de la cathédrale à travers ces trappes circulaires.&nbsp;&nbsp;Elles ensuite été conditionnées sur un camion en vue de leur transport jusqu’à la fonderie où elles seront restaurées, afin de retrouver leur place dans la cathédrale avant sa réouverture en décembre 2024.&nbsp;
