With these eight lead birds of prey guarding it from now on, the spire seems safe from any danger! They are part of the lead decorations that the roofers place on the spire.
After the 192 hooks that adorn the top of the spire, here are some more complex works, fashioned in the workshop before taking their final place on the cathedral.
Nicknamed "grand ducs", these cast lead eagles crown the spire's eight highest hip posts. The others are topped by finials, also made of cast lead. Finally, each post is covered with lead that has been hammered in the workshop.
These assemblies form elegant pinnacles that give the spire its grace and slenderness.
