In a workshop in Deux-Sèvres, carpenters are making the carved oak sculptures that will be installed on <a href="https://rebatirnotredamedeparis.fr/en/restoration/reconstruction-of-the-frameworks-and-spire" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">the spire</a> of Notre Dame this summer.&nbsp;The spire of the cathedral of Notre Dame de Paris is both a complex technical structure designed to resist the harshest weather conditions, and a work of art with multiple decors. Each of the eight faces is adorned with nearly 200 hooks and floral motifs, 16 pinnacles, 32 gargoyles, 16 bay arches and 8 quatrefoils, all inspired by the medieval esthetic revived by Viollet-le-Duc.&nbsp;The decorations were made using two different techniques: carved wood with lead plating or molded lead.&nbsp;&nbsp;The carved wood decorations make up about two thirds of the spire’s decor and are being crafted in the Asselin carpentry workshop in Thouars.&nbsp;After a long period of construction surveying by companies to define the exact dimensions of the decorations to be recreated, work began on carving the wood in spring 2023, directed by the project managers and chief architects for historic monuments. The aim of the work is to recreate the cathedral’s woodwork exactly as it was.&nbsp;This operation involves many professions: companies in the forestry-wood industry – from forest managers to sawyers – for the selection and felling of the trees, structural engineers for the calculations, draftsmen and designers for the digital models and carving and assembly plans, project managers for methodological and logistical studies, and finally carpenters for the carving and pre-assembly of the wood in the workshops before assembly on site.&nbsp;&nbsp;Army General Jean-Louis Georgelin, President of the public establishment, Philippe Jost, Deputy General Director, and the project management teams visited the Asselin workshops in Thouars at the invitation of the companies of the&nbsp;Le Bras Frères group, client, Cruard and MDB-Les Métiers du bois, and their partners ECSB – Etude charpente et Structure Bois, BET Calvi, and Aubert-Labensat.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Dans un atelier des Deux-Sèvres, les charpentiers réalisent les décors sculptés en bois de chêne qui prendront place cet été sur <a href="https://rebatirnotredamedeparis.fr/restauration/la-reconstruction-des-charpentes-et-de-la-fleche" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">la flèche</a> de Notre-Dame.&nbsp;La flèche de la cathédrale Notre-Dame de Paris est à la fois un ouvrage technique complexe, conçu pour résister aux plus fortes intempéries, et une œuvre d’art aux multiples décors. Chacune de ses huit faces est ornée de près de 200 crochets et motifs floraux, 16 pinacles, 32 gargouilles, 16 arcatures de baies et 8 quadrilobes, tous inspirés par l’esthétique médiévale remise à l’honneur par Viollet-le-Duc.&nbsp;Ces décors sont réalisés selon deux techniques différentes : en bois sculpté et recouvert de plomb ou directement en plomb moulé.&nbsp;&nbsp;Les décors en bois sculpté, représentant environ deux tiers des décors de la flèche, sont en cours de réalisation dans des ateliers de charpente d’Asselin à Thouars.&nbsp;&nbsp;Après une longue période d’études d’exécution menées par les entreprises pour définir les gabarits précis des décors à restituer, les travaux de sculpture des bois sont en cours depuis le printemps 2023, sous la direction des architectes en chef des monuments historiques, maîtres d’œuvre. Ils s’inscrivent dans le projet de restitution à l’identique des charpentes de la cathédrale.&nbsp;Cette opération mobilise de nombreux métiers : acteurs de la filière forêt-bois – des forestiers aux scieurs – pour la sélection et la récolte des bois, ingénieurs en structure pour les calculs, dessinateurs et projeteurs pour les modélisations numériques, plans de taille et d’assemblage, conducteurs de travaux pour les études méthodologiques et logistiques, enfin charpentiers pour la taille et le pré-assemblage des bois en atelier, puis leur assemblage sur site.&nbsp;&nbsp;Le Général d’armée Jean-Louis Georgelin, président de l’établissement public, Philippe Jost, directeur général délégué, et les équipes de la maitrise d’oeuvre ont visité les ateliers Asselin à Thouars, à l’invitation des entreprises du groupement&nbsp;Le Bras Frères, mandataire, Cruard et MDB-Les Métiers du bois, ainsi que leurs partenaires ECSB – Etude charpente et Structure Bois, BET Calvi et Aubert-Labensat.&nbsp;&nbsp;
