Between stone and metal: a highly symbolic day for Notre-Dame de Paris! This Friday May 24 was marked by two major milestones in the restoration: the completion of the transept crossing vault and the return of the chevet cross.&nbsp;This morning, at the heart of the cathedral, the stonemasons laid the last stone of the crossing vault. Completely destroying during the fire, its reconstruction required 7,000 voussoirs, previously cut to size in the workshop, and the expert skills of some 50 stonemasons.&nbsp;Engraved with the date of its installation, the final stone marks the end of the reconstruction of the vaults.&nbsp;Later in the day, the 12m-tall chevet cross, designed by Viollet-le-Duc, was returned to its place at the top of the timber framework in the choir. The only element of the choir roof that survived the blaze, the chevet cross required 1,000 hours of work by master wrought-iron workers.Its return is a step further towards the completion of the roof and its ornaments in the choir, the first of which were installed on the timber framework in February 2024.&nbsp;The chevet cross was blessed by Monsignor Olivier Ribadeau Dumas, Rector and Archpriest of the Cathedral, before being placed at the top of the chevet in the presence of Philippe Jost, President of the Rebâtir Notre-Dame de Paris public establishment, Philippe Villeneuve, Head Architect for Historic Monuments.&nbsp;<a href="https://youtube.com/shorts/gjfMrmUv6f8?si=MZHg6clrGuveK29p" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Relive the installation of the cross</a>&nbsp;Many congratulations to everyone who took part in the work!

Entre pierre et métal : une journée hautement symbolique pour Notre-Dame de Paris&nbsp;! Ce vendredi 24 mai a été marqué de deux jalons importants de la restauration : la fermeture de la voûte de la croisée du transept et le retour de la croix du chevet.&nbsp;Ce matin, au chœur de la cathédrale, les maçons-tailleurs de pierre ont posé la dernière pierre de la voûte de la croisée. Entièrement détruite lors de l'incendie, sa reconstruction a nécessité 7000 voussoirs, préalablement taillés en atelier, et a mobilisé le savoir-faire d'une cinquantaine de maçons-tailleurs de pierre. Gravée de la date de sa pose, cette dernière pierre vient marquer la fin de la reconstruction des voûtes.&nbsp;Plus tard dans la journée, la croix du chevet, dessinée par Viollet-le-Duc et haute de 12 mètres, a retrouvé sa place au sommet de la charpente du chœur. Seul élément de la couverture du chœur ayant survécu aux flammes, la croix du chevet a nécessité 1000 heures de travail par les ferronniers d’art. Son retour est un pas de plus dans le bon avancement de la restitution de la couverture et des ornements de toiture du chœur, dont la pose a débuté sur les charpentes en février 2024.&nbsp;En présence de Philippe Jost, président de l’Etablissement public Rebâtir Notre-Dame de Paris, et de Philippe Villeneuve, architecte en chef des monuments historiques, la croix du chevet a été bénie par Mgr Olivier Ribadeau Dumas, recteur-archiprêtre de la cathédrale, avant d’être mise en place au sommet du chevet.&nbsp;<a href="https://youtube.com/shorts/gjfMrmUv6f8?si=MZHg6clrGuveK29p" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Revivez la pose de la croix</a>&nbsp;Un grand bravo à l'ensemble des acteurs mobilisés sur ces deux opérations !
